Mobile Data Speeds in India

2019-01-14

Visualize crowdsourced data about mobile data speeds (2G, 3G, and 4G) offered by different cellular service providers in India.

Interesting Insights

  1. Reliance Jio has a suspiciously high average data speed (see tab #2 and #3).
  2. The state of Bihar, on an average, records the highest mobile data speed in the 4G spectrum.
  3. The state of Haryana, on an average, offers the highest mobile data speed in the 2G spectrum.

Usage

Map

  1. Indicates the average data speed (for all providers) in the states of India.
  2. Hover over a state to view the average signal strength and average data speed for that state.
  3. Use the sidebar tools to filter for or look for certain data.

Histogram

  1. Shows the number of times (count) a test found data speed within certain ranges.
  2. Buckets (ranges) are in multiples of 10 Mbps, i.e., the first bar represents the range 0.00–9.99 Mbps, the second 10.00–19.99 Mbps, and so forth.
  3. Use the sidebar tools to filter for or look for certain data.

Horizontal Bar Chart

  1. The length of the bar indicates the average data speed for that provider.
  2. The black vertical line through each bar represents the median data value recorded for that provider.
  3. Use the sidebar tools to filter for or look for certain data.

Notes

  1. The data featured in this visualisation is crowdsourced. The data was obtained from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s “MySpeed” initiative.
  2. A signal strength of, say, -100 dBm is weaker than -60 dBm. For more information about signal strengths, you can take a look at this Stack Overflow answer about signal strength magnitudes.
  3. Note that the data here is crowdsourced. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the lack of uniformity of data. As you’ll see in the histogram, the number of tests performed on the Airtel and Jio networks far exceeds the number of tests performed on other networks.
  4. Here’s a whitepaper by TRAI on their initiative, testing, and methods employed.
